The rapid development and innovations in educational technologies such as distance and ubiquitous learning, and Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have brought immediate changes in the common education practice of engineering studies. Globally, the advances in the digital technologies like cloud computing, mobile devices, online games, and global interactions and information sharing through social media have created a broader scope for the research and development of effective educational models. Pedagogy and teaching practices continue to evolve and now include innovation through integration, project‐based learning, virtual laboratories, e-learning, virtual organizations, and the development of best practices for the maximum utilization of digital devices and online information to improve education and enhance learning, and stimulate innovations and entrepreneurship among the student community. The changing scenarios in the academic institutions with the integration of digital and online resources in the classrooms have a better effect on the student communities of continuing engineering education. The encouraging modern developments in the flipped classrooms and MOOCs provide global access to online educational resources. The modern educational technologies help students by stimulating the innovative thinking, and the user-friendly approaches guide them to learn about the emerging technologies of engineering and technology.

This special issue is intended to report high-quality research on recent advances towards the realization of new educational technologies for engineering and technology studies. This special issue also aims to demonstrate the emerging issues in the research of educational practices in engineering and technology including various learning approaches, intelligent learning systems, and smart environments. Original and research articles are solicited in all aspects including theoretical studies, practical applications, and experimental prototypes. Unpublished innovative papers which are not currently under review to another journal or conference are invited in the following relevant areas.
