ER 2020 : 39th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling

Vienna, Austria
Event Date: November 03, 2020 - November 06, 2020
Abstract Submission Deadline: April 20, 2020

Notification of Acceptance: June 15, 2020

About

The world is being reconstructed through software and data. Conceptual models seem mandatory to cope with this gigantic transformation that is unprecedented in the history of humankind. Not only do they build a solid foundation for designing software systems, they also foster the empowerment of users and help us to develop images of possible future worlds. However, recent developments in AI challenge this pivotal role of conceptual models. Some AI proponents go so far as to predict the end of conceptual modeling, for an ostensibly convincing reason: machine learning will enable automated software construction, both faster and at much lower costs. These contradictory assessments make it especially exciting to reflect upon the foundations of conceptual modeling and the limitations of inductive approaches to software creation.

The ER conference has been the leading conference on conceptual modeling for many years. In continuation of this tradition, ER 2020 is dedicated to providing a forum for discussing the present and future role of conceptual modeling with regard to enabling and managing change.

Call for Papers

We solicit submission of original research, as well as experience and vision papers, from both researchers and practitioners, welcoming any topic where conceptual modeling is a major theme. Submissions that relate to change in general, and the digital transformation in particular, are especially welcome, since the overall theme of ER 2020 is:

Digital Transformation—Exciting Times for Conceptual Modeling

Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling including research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, modeling languages, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations.

Submission Guidelines

Since the proceedings will be published by Springer in the LNCS series, authors must submit manuscripts using the LNCS style. See http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html for style files and details. The page limit for submitted papers (as well as for final, camera-ready papers) is 14. Manuscripts not submitted in the LNCS style or exceeding the page limit will not be reviewed and will be automatically rejected. Springer has provided a LaTeX template in Overleaf for your convenience.

A paper submitted to ER 2020 may not be under review for any other conference or journal during the time it is being considered for ER 2020. Submitted papers must demonstrate awareness of the state-of-the art literature in conceptual modeling by properly citing relevant papers in the field.

Submission is done through EasyChair. (More instructions to follow.)

ER 2020 Awards

There will be two awards given to authors at ER 2020:

  • Best Student Paper Award: to be given to the best paper whose first author is a student.

  • Best Paper Award: to be given to the best paper.
