Bodies in Motion: Reassessing Materiality through Space and Time

16th annual Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies Graduate Student Conference

The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque

March 29-30, 2024

Keynote lecture to be delivered by: Kirsten Pai Buick, University of New Mexico

The 16th annual Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies Graduate Student Conference invites scholars and graduate students to explore the dynamic interplay between bodies, materiality and their transformative journeys across space and time. This interdisciplinary conference offers a platform to engage with the multifaceted nature of these concepts in literature, culture and the arts.

In an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world, the relationship between bodies and materiality remains a vital and evolving subject of inquiry. This conference seeks to address questions of how bodies are defined, perceived and represented in various cultural, geographical and temporal contexts. It encourages participants to critically assess the role of space and time in shaping and reshaping the materiality of bodies. Understanding the intricate interplay between these factors can lead to fresh insights into topics such as migration, diaspora, embodiment, technology and environmental studies. By exploring the fluid and transformative nature of bodies and materiality, this conference aims to contribute to ongoing dialogues within the fields of comparative literature and cultural studies.

The theme of this conference is significant in its capacity to stimulate innovative discussions and facilitate interdisciplinary exchanges. It prompts scholars to revisit existing paradigms, redefine boundaries and reconsider the implications of their research in an ever-evolving global context. The “Bodies in Motion” conference presents an opportunity for scholars and graduate students to collectively explore and rethink the relationship between bodies, materiality, space and time, thereby enriching the intellectual landscape within these fields and fostering a deeper understanding of our rapidly changing world.

Conference Structure: The conference will be in-person (with the option of synchronous online participation for out-of-state participants) and will consist of the keynote address, panels and a closing workshop led by the keynote speaker. Panel presentations will be 20 minutes in length, plus discussion time (10 minutes). There will also be a closing reception on Saturday evening, which is open to all participants and audience members.

To submit your proposal, please send a 500 word abstract along with a brief biographical statement to [email protected] by February 2, 2024. Selected participants will be notified by February 9, 2024.
