Autonomous devices gained widespread attention among researchers and industry people due to advances in robotics and artificial intelligence. Revolutionary changes are expected in robots, drones and autonomous vehicles over the next few years. Autonomous devices are combined with Internet of Things and cloud computing to create powerful interconnected systems for many real-world applications. Drones with sensors are used to inspect roads, pipelines and plants in agricultural lands, whereas robots are widely deployed in most manufacturing industries. Though the idea of autonomous devices is attractive, it is necessary to address the challenges related to safety, performance and power management. Device performance and safety aspects need to be addressed using powerful algorithms and artificial
intelligence techniques. To improve safety in autonomous systems, intelligent sensing and signal processing techniques have to be applied with necessary algorithms. While using sensors and cameras in autonomous devices, a huge amount of data is generated that requires big data analysis with machine learning algorithms.
Data analysis in the cloud environment results in network latency, which can be overcome using edge computing/fog computing by processing data locally. Autonomous devices and sensors have to consume minimal power and this requires efficient power management systems and energy harvesting schemes.

This special issue will focus on technological developments and key issues in the area of autonomous devices.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
• Cloud computing for autonomous systems
• Security issues related to autonomous devices
• Security frameworks for robotic applications
• Machine learning techniques for drone control
• Artificial intelligence for self-driving vehicles
• Cloud computing-based safety solutions
• Internet of Things for autonomous vehicles
• Edge computing for Internet of Things
• Big data analytics for autonomous vehicles
• Intelligent sensing techniques
• Soft computing techniques for robotics and automation
• Intelligent power solutions
• Energy harvesting solutions for sensors and autonomous devices
