Call For Papers (Submission deadline: June 3, 2022)

Online marketplace is a digital platform that connects buyers (demand) and sellers (supply) and provides exposure opportunities that individual participants would not otherwise have access to. Online marketplaces exist in a diverse set of domains and industries, for example, rideshare (Lyft, DiDi, Uber), house rental (Airbnb), real estate (Beke), online retail (Amazon, Ebay), job search (LinkedIn, Indeed.com, CareerBuilder), and food ordering and delivery (Doordash, Meituan). Besides academia, many companies and institutions are researching on topics specific to their particular domains. The fundamental mechanism of an online marketplace is to match supply and demand to generate transactions, with objectives considering service quality, participants experience, financial and operational efficiency. It is valuable to bring together researchers and practitioners from different application domains to discuss their experiences, challenges, and opportunities to leverage cross-domain knowledge. The goal of this workshop is to offer an opportunity to appreciate the diversity in applications, to draw connections to inform decision optimization across different industries, and to discover new problems that are fundamental to marketplaces of different domains.

This workshop will follow a dual-track format. Track 1 covers the issues and algorithms pertinent to general online marketplaces as well as specific problems and applications arising from those diverse domains, such as ridesharing, online retail, food delivery, house rental, real estate, and more. Track 2 focuses on the state of the art advances in the computational jobs marketplace. Interesting challenges in this domain include the drastic increase of work from home or remote work, the imbalance between the demand and supply of the job market, the popularity of independent workers, the capability of helping job seekers on their whole job seeking journey and career development, the different objectives and behaviors of all major stakeholders in the ecosystem, e.g. job seekers, employers, recruiters and job agents.

Topics
Track 1: General online marketplaces
We invite paper submission with a focus that aligns with the goals of this workshop. Our topics of interest span over prediction, planning, and decision problems for online marketplaces, including but not limited to
- supply-demand prediction,
- ETA (expected time-of-arrival) prediction,
- dynamic matching and assignment,
- supply planning and rebalancing,
- dynamic pricing,
- search, ranking, recommendation, and personalization,
- growth and monetization,
- simulation, evaluation and experimentation,
- privacy-aware operations,
- decision-making under competition,
- algorithms applied to the above topics: deep learning, reinforcement learning, multi-armed bandits, causal inference, mathematical programming, and stochastic optimization,
- applications: ridesharing, online retail, food delivery, house rental, real estate, and more.

Track 2: Computational job marketplaces
We solicit papers describing significant and innovative research and applications to the field of job marketplaces. We invite submissions on a wide range of topics, spanning both theoretical and practical research and applications. Topics include but not limited to:
- Job search technologies
- Large-scale and novel targeting technologies
- User and job understanding
- Recommendation systems
- Budget control and optimization
- Ranking and scoring systems
- Marketplace experiments and A/B testing
- Creative optimization
- Fraud, fairness, explainability and privacy
- Intelligent assistants in job hunting and hiring automation
- Large-scale and high performing data infrastructure, data analysis and tooling
- Deployed systems and battle scars
- Economics and causal inference in online jobs marketplace
- Large-scale analytics of user behaviors in online jobs marketplace

Submission

We welcome full research papers, position papers, and extended abstracts. Papers that are under review at another conference or journal are acceptable for submission at this workshop, but we will not accept papers that have already been accepted or published at a venue with formal proceedings (including KDD 2022). All accepted papers will be archived on the workshop website, but there will not be formal proceedings.

Submission portal: Papers are submitted through the CMT portal for this workshop: https://cmt3.research.microsoft.com/OnlineMarketplaces2022/Submission/Index.
Please select the track for your submission in Primary Subject Area and indicate if your submission is a full paper or an extended abstract in Secondary Subject Area.

Paper format: Papers must be in PDF format, and formatted according to the new Standard ACM Conference Proceedings Template. Additional information about formatting and style files is available here: https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template.

Paper length: Full papers are limited to a total of 6 pages, including all content and references. In addition, authors can provide an optional two (2) page supplement at the end of their submitted paper (it needs to be in the same PDF file) focused on reproducibility. Extended abstracts should not exceed 2 pages, excluding references. No supplement is allowed for extended abstracts.

Review Process: Each full paper will be reviewed by three PC members, while extended abstracts will not be reviewed. The acceptance decisions will take in account novelty, technical depth and quality, insightfulness, depth, elegance, practical or theoretical impact, reproducibility and presentation. We will use double-blind reviewing. For each accepted paper, at least one author must attend the workshop and present the paper. Please refer to the KDD 2022 website for the policies of Conflict of Interest, Violations of Originality, and Dual Submission: https://kdd.org/kdd2022/cfpResearch.html.

A Best Paper Award will be presented to the best full paper as voted by the reviewers. All extended abstracts and full papers are to be presented at the poster sessions. Accepted papers will be given the opportunity to present at the spotlight sessions during the workshop. (Depending on the volume of submissions, we may be able to accommodate only a subset of them.)
