Dear Colleagues,
In recent decades, the implementation of nanotechnology to develop efficient antimicrobial and drug delivery systems has had a noteworthy impact in the biomedical field. In order to solve the clinically relevant problems within the biomedical fields, new technologies are being put forward as promising solutions. One of the forthcoming approaches is the use of nanogels. These polymeric hydrogel nanoparticles offer many potential solutions to biomedical problems, particularly in combatting biomaterial-associated infections. Nanogels are soft polymeric particles with an internally cross-linked structure which behave as hydrogels, and their excellent properties (e.g., biocompatibility, colloidal stability, high water content, desirable mechanical properties, tunable chemical functionalities, and interior gel-like network for the incorporation of biomolecules) make them attractive in the field of biological/biomedical applications. Nanogels can be used as drug carriers as biomedicines, but on the other hand can be used to modify surfaces and thereby create surface coatings as an alternative approach. These smart nanoparticles offer facile methods to create well-organized surface coatings to be used for various purposes in the biomedical field. This Special Issue will provide various approaches to the synthesis and functionalization of nanogels in terms of efficiency and applicability for determining their potential role in biomedicines in the biomedical area.
