Today’s world faces many scientific, economic, societal, climatic, and environmental challenges that require sustainable technological and engineering solutions. In developed countries, advancements in sciences and technology provide fundamental means of tackling these challenges. However, in less developed countries, e.g., in Africa, these challenges are often insurmountable due to the lack of basic premises of sciences, research, and development. With the African continent having the youngest population, the world organizations on human welfare report that these challenges are exacerbated by the rapid growth of the population and a surge of the youth in urban communities. This situation leads to tremendous demands on services at all levels with subsequent impacts on the requirements of infrastructure, including energy production, civil engineering, communication, transportation, manufacturing, etc. Therefore, new and emerging strategies from all aspects of human activities, including scientists, engineers, and other key decision-makers are required to address these complex challenges cutting across several domains to meet the present and future demands of the population in Africa. |
