14th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS 2024) 15-19 July 2024 (Enschede, Netherlands) - 08-09 July 2024 (online) Website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/ ============================ The FOIS conference is a meeting point for all researchers interested in formal ontology. Formal ontology is the systematic study of the types of entities and relations comprising the domains of interest represented in modern information systems. The conference encourages the submission of high-quality, not previously published results on both theoretical issues and practical advancements. FOIS 2024 will have distinct tracks for foundational issues, ontology applications and methods, and domain ontologies. FOIS 2024 will be held both online and in Enschede, the Netherlands, by the Semantics, Cybersecurity & Services group of the University of Twente. The conference will include the following tracks: - Main Papers Track* - Workshops Track - Joint Ontology Workshops (JOWO)* - Tutorials Track* - Ontology showcase Track - Demonstrations Track - Journal-first Track - Project exhibitions Track * Calls currently open, details below ============================ Call for Papers ============================ FOIS 2024 seeks three types of full-length (14 pages) high-quality papers on a wide range of topics: - Foundational papers address content-related ontological issues, their formal representation, and their relevance to some aspect of information systems. - Application and Methods papers address novel systems, methods, and tools related to building, evaluating, or using ontologies, emphasizing the impact of ontology contents. - Domain ontology papers describe a novel ontology for a specific realm of interest, clarifying ontological choices against requirements and foundational theory, and showing ontology use. As usual, the FOIS proceedings will be published by IOS Press. ** Important dates Paper submission: 26 February 2024 (AoE) Notifications: 15 April 2024 Virtual conference: 8-9 July 2024 Onsite conference: 15-19 July 2024 Camera-ready papers: 30 July 2024 ============================ Call for Workshop Proposals - Joint Ontology Workshops (JOWO) Episode X: The Tukker Zomer of Ontology Webpage: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/workshops/#overview ============================ The mission of the Joint Ontology Workshops (JOWO) is to join forces of the diverse communities interested in building, reasoning with, and applying formalized ontologies in the wide spectrum of information sciences, artificial intelligence theory and applications, philosophy and cognitive science, and beyond. As in earlier years, all contributions to accepted workshops will be published open access in a joint CEUR proceedings volume, as part of the new IAOA series (http://ceur-ws.org/iaoa.html). We encourage several forms and lengths of workshops (the list is non-exhaustive): -Workshops that focus on an established research area, including continuations of workshops that were held in the past; -Workshops that focus on emerging topics and applications, or on open research questions and challenges; -Workshops that aim to create cross-disciplinary research fostering the exchange of ideas between groups otherwise mostly disconnected Workshops that promote hands-on activities related to ontologies and their applications. ** Important dates Workshop proposal submission: 14 December, 2023 Workshop acceptance notification: 08 January 2024 Workshop call for papers announcement and publicity: 31 January 2024 Workshop paper submission deadline: 17 April 2024 Workshop author notification: 15 May 2024 Camera-ready submission (post-conference proceedings): 30 June 2024 Workshop day: between 15-19 July 2024 (co-located with FOIS 2024) ============================ Call for Tutorials Webpage: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/tutorials/ ============================ FOIS 2024 seeks original and highly relevant proposals for tutorials to complement the conference program. The tutorial program will address the diverse interests of its audience: ontologies, formal ontology, and knowledge management and their application in information science or other areas. Moreover, tutorials can be an excellent opportunity to cover basic or advanced topics related to ontology research, ranging from Cognitive Science to Knowledge Representation, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Logic, Philosophy, and Linguistics as well as well established or emerging research areas, techniques, methodologies and perspectives related to the Ontology field. In 2024, we are looking for individuals and teams of presenters who would like to offer a tutorial specifically designed as a basic or an advanced description of a topic. We privilege diversity in the organising team as well as the presence of young researchers and PhD students. Moreover, up to 1 instructor per tutorial can have their registration fees waived for the main conference and any subset of co-located tutorials and workshops. **Format Tutorials are intended to be highly interactive, educational, and should actively engage the audience to participate in the discussion. A full tutorial is expected to last 1.5 hours. ** Important dates Submission deadline: 16 February 2024 Notification: 08 March 2024 Camera-ready submission (post-conference proceedings): 30 July 2024 Tutorials take place on-site in conjunction with FOIS 2024 in Enschede, Netherlands (15-19 July 2024) ============================ Call for Ontology showcase Webpage: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/showcase/ ============================ The Ontology Showcase at FOIS gives authors the opportunity to increase the impact of their work, get early feedback from the community on ongoing work, promote the sharing and the reuse of curated high-quality ontologies. **Differentiation from the Main Track The ontology showcase is a practical track aimed at stimulating the community to share their ontologies, make them more visible and get (early) feedback, even if their development is still an ongoing or early work that does not provide a mature scientific contribution suitable to be submitted (yet) to the main track. ** Important dates Paper submission: 17 April 2024 Notification of acceptance: 15 May 2024 Author registration: 03 June 2024 Online conference: 08-09 July 2024 Onsite conference (Enschede): 15-19 July 2024 Camera-ready version: 30 July 2024 ============================ Call for Demonstrations Website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/demos/#definition-and-scope ============================ The demonstration track complements FOIS 2024 full-length paper main tracks by offering an interactive platform for authors to present and discuss their work. We invite demonstrations of tools and methods developed using ontologies, as well as those to create, maintain, integrate, publish, evaluate, and implement ontologies. We also invite demonstrations of novel ontology (anti)patterns and of challenges arising in the ontology engineering life cycle. The goal is to raise the visibility and foster understanding of the dynamic, integrative, and use-oriented aspects of applied ontology, its tools, and its uses. ** Important dates Submissions due: 17 April 2024 Notifications of acceptance: 15 May 2024 Onsite Conference: 15-19 July 2024 Online conference: 08-09 July 2024 Camera-ready versions due: 30 July 2024 ============================ Call for Journal-first Website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/journal-first/ ============================ The FOIS 2024 journal-first track provides a forum to discuss recent published research on topics related to formal ontology for broader dissemination within the FOIS community. The track invites submissions of extended abstracts of papers that have appeared or have been accepted for publication in journals, but have not been previously presented at FOIS or any other applied ontology-focused conference, including ICBO, ISWC, ESWC, K-CAP, and all JOWO workshops. ** Important dates Paper submission: 17 April 2024 Author notification: 15 May 2024 ============================ Call for Project exhibitions Website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/eemcs/fois2024/calls/project-exhibitions/ ============================ FOIS 2024's Research and Industrial Project Exhibition invites researchers and practitioners to present their perspectives, ongoing, or recently finished projects (e.g., H2020, ERC, national grants) involving in some form the area of Formal Ontology in Information Systems. The primary goal is to provide a platform for disseminating interim project results and receiving feedback on evolving research proposals. This event fosters collaboration by facilitating connections between potential research partners, nurturing existing relationships, and encouraging discourse on innovative research ideas. Participants gain insights into ongoing research developments and opportunities to network with potential collaborators. We also welcome submissions from other tracks of FOIS 2024 to present their broader project context within the Project Exhibitions track, offering an opportunity to showcase how these submissions fit into the context of larger projects. ** Important dates Paper submission: 29 April 2024 Author notification: 15 May 2024 Author registration: 03 June 2024 Conference (Enschede, Netherlands): 15-19 July 2024 Camera-ready papers: 30 July 2024 ============================ Organizers ============================ General Chairs Giancarlo Guizzardi; University of Twente; The Netherlands Program Committee Chairs Cassia Trojahn, IRIT Université Toulouse 2, France Daniele Porello, University of Genova, Italy Local Organisation Chair Tiago Prince Sales, University of Twente, The Netherlands JOWO Chairs Claudenir M.
