DNA-HSV 2019 : DNA Repair, Replication and Herpes Viruses

Herpesviruses are a complex group of DNA containing viruses that have been isolated from most animal species and humans. These viruses are further subdivided into three subfamilies based upon their biological and genetic properties. However, a common feature of the life cycle of these viruses in their natural host is that they exhibit lytic replication and latency, which are important for the production of new virus, and in maintenance of the virus for the lifetime of the host. They are capable of causing overt disease or remaining silent for many years only to be reactivated to induce disease. Herpesviruses are a leading cause of human viral disease, second only to influenza and cold-associated viruses. Numerous studies have demonstrated that these viruses modify the DNA damage response of the host, but questions remain regarding why this is important to the virus.
