For decades, scholars in the field of education have underscored cultural competence (Gay, 2010; Howard, 2006) that reverses the underachievement of diverse populations while transforming the educational setting. Research indicates that culturally competent educators acknowledges and builds on cultural diversity (Gay 2002; Institute for Educational Leadership, 2010). In order to promote effective learning, individuals must feel fully appreciated within their own unique identities (i.e. ethnicities, language differences, socioeconomic status, gender, religions). Culturally competent educators employ practices that identify students themselves as resources and honor assets possessed within the context of the school community. This publication will explore best practices and considerations for building culturally competent comprehensive programming and serve as a courier for stakeholders fostering inclusive and forward thinking opportunities in PK‑20 settings.
