1. Introduction

An Intelligent City, also known as Smart City or Cognitive City, is a new vision for urban development to integrate the various sectors of the society through the use of Internet of Things technologies. The objective is to integrate and manage a city’s resources such as transportation, healthcare, commerce, education, utilities, law enforcement, as well as city’s various e-government information systems. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of life of citizens and efficiency of city’s services and processes, ensuring that citizens’ day to day needs are met and they are empowered to affect the city’s functioning. Relevant computing technologies, social media offerings, distributed computing paradigms, mobile technology, communication protocols, and device connectivity frameworks are already well established to: 1) empower the citizens to provision the e-services provided by the city; 2) allow city officials to interact directly with the community and to monitor digital environments of intelligent cities; and 3) develop smart communities where citizens can enjoy improved quality of life living in smart environments of intelligent cities.

In this context, the proposed book aims to investigate development, management, and monitoring approaches to building digital cities and intelligent environments therein. Emphasis is also on the current and future use of IoT frameworks, related methodologies, device connectivity approaches, communication protocols as well as inherent issues and limitations.

2. Suggested Topics

The relevant topics include:

• Concepts, principles and technologies relating to intelligent cities
• Development, monitoring, and management approaches to smart cities
• Advanced mobile and communication technologies relating to intelligent cities
• Smart living in smart environments in intelligent digital cities
• Intelligent transportation and related technologies
• Frameworks for smart healthcare, smart homes and smart utilities
• Methodologies for Industrial IoT and smart social environments
• Autonomous vehicles, MANET and VANET
• Wireless communication and V2V networks
• Sustainability, quality, energy efficient services for smart cities
• Frameworks and methodologies for management and governance
• Business models and architectural frameworks for intelligent city environments
• Big data storage, analytics and management for distributed environments
• Technology, data, and information fusion
• Ambient intelligence, AI and machine learning in distributed computing
• Inherent issues and Opportunities relating to intelligent cities
• Security, privacy, trust, safety and governance in IoT
• Device connectivity and communication protocols for IoT
• Future directions and case studies relevant to intelligent cities
• … other relevant topics

It is expected that the book will comprise a number of sections. A tentative idea is as follows:

• Section 1 - Concepts, Principles and Technologies: Concepts/principles, historical perspective, Development/monitoring/management approaches, IoT, advanced mobile and distributive communication technologies
• Section 2 - Smart Living and Intelligent Environments: Intelligent transportation, smart healthcare, Smart homes, smart utilities, Industrial IoT, Autonomous vehicles, MANET, VANET, Sustainability, quality, energy efficient services

• Section 4 - Issues and Opportunities: Security, privacy, trust, safety and governance, Data storage and management, device connectivity, Limitations/issues, future directions, and case studies

3. Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit 1-2-page chapter proposals clearly stating the objective, scope and structure of the proposed chapters - by the deadline mentioned above. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified within two weeks (in most cases) and given guidelines for full chapter preparation. Completed chapters should be approximately 10,000 words or 20-30 pages in length – longer chapters will also be acceptable. Full chapters will be reviewed following a double-blind peer review process to ensure relevance, quality, originality and high information content. IGI’s e-editorial discovery system will be used for most the chapter development and submission processes. In the first instance, 1-2-page chapter proposals, as WORD files, should be sent to: [email protected]

4. Important Dates

• Chapter proposals due date: 31 August 2019
• Notification of acceptance: within 2 weeks of receipt of proposals
• Full chapters due date: within 6 weeks of acceptance notification
• Chapter reviews feedback: within 6 weeks of chapter due date
• Revised chapters due date: within 3 weeks of review feedback
