International Journal of Web Based Communities https://www.inderscience.com/jhome.php?jcode=ijwbc Special Issue on: “Advances in Smart Internet of Things for Online User Communities” Guest Editors: • Dr. V. Vijayakumar, School of Computing Science and Engineering, Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, India • Dr. V. Subramaniyaswamy, School of Computing, SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur, India • Dr. Piet Kommers, Professor of Unesco Technologies, University of Twente, Netherlands • Dr. Logesh Ravi, Sri Ramachandra faculty of Engineering and Technology, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, India With the development of convergence technology, all spaces and objects in human living have become digitalized. Due to enhancing life quality, increasing chronic disease, changing lifestyle and expanding life expectancy, rapid population aging requires a new business model that promotes happiness and emphasizes healthy body and mind through the anytime anywhere well-being lifestyle. Recently, machine-to-machine computing systems using internet of things are being released as products influential on the overall society, and their effectiveness is being continuously proved. In addition, based on the machine-to-machine computing, diverse companies are conducting investments and researches to develop devices as well as to develop machine-to-machine platform solutions that connect to internet of things devices. The machine-to-machine computing technology combined with artificial intelligence, machine-to-machine wireless networks, machine learning, machine-to-machine based knowledge base, peer-to-peer networking, hybrid networking, machine-to-machine cloud computing, and internet of things is applied to more diverse convergence fields. In order to build a reliable machine-to-machine computing system using internet of things, they are inter-connected by using the architectures networks and hybrid machine-to-machine protocols. Also, each wireless machine-to-machine transmission router and link optimally selected according to the hybrid machine-to-machine network conditions can collect the computing information for intelligence of things in real-time. This is a new value-added service that may have an influence on our lifestyle, and it is likely that this will bring changes to our life quality as well as to the involved industry. In the coming era of Internet of Things (IoTs), numerous data will be generated by the end devices, such as web cameras, sensors, and RFIDs. Although these data can be turned into valuable insights, it requires facilities with sufficient computing power to perform data analytics. Traditionally, a centralized cloud server plays the role of the powerful facility, which is deemed as the cloud computing paradigm. Unfortunately, transferring data from end devices to the cloud server involves the Internet with unpredictable delay, which limits its practicability in real-time applications, especially the visual ones, i.e., augmented/virtual reality, which demands end-to-end delay in milliseconds. To this end, edge computing and mobile transparent computing emerge, in which the small scale edge servers are deployed in proximity of the end device. By shortening the connection between end devices and servers, the end-to-end delay can be largely reduced to achieve real-time applications. This special issue is intended to report high-quality research on recent advances towards the realization of new technologies of internet of things for online user communities. This special issue also aims to demonstrate the emerging issues in the research of artificial intelligence and internet of things in machine-to-machine systems including various analytical approaches, intelligent systems, and smart environments.
