Call for Papers

ApPLIED: Workshop on Advanced tools, programming languages, and PLatforms for Implementing and Evaluating algorithms for Distributed systems -- held in conjunction with DISC 2019.

Homepage: http://bit.ly/ApPLIED2019

===============================================================================
SCOPE
===============================================================================

Designers wishing to implement and evaluate distributed algorithms in practical settings are often faced with challenging questions regarding the transformation from design to a working prototype. For example, what language should be used? What library or tool should be used for communication between processes? On which platform should the algorithms be implemented and evaluated? What trade-offs should be taken, e.g., choose a freely available setting with moderate maintenance or an expensive but developer-friendly one?

Context is also important. Some design assumptions might not be feasible or affordable to implement in practice while certain considerations might be irrelevant. In other words, some important issues in theory might not be important in practice, whereas some practical obstacles deserve more attention and analysis.

===============================================================================
TOPICS
===============================================================================

The ApPLIED workshop aims to bring together designers and practitioners of distributed algorithms and systems to share their perspectives and experiences. We solicit submissions describing research results and position statements addressing the above challenges, covering all relevant topics including, but not limited to:

* Languages, libraries, platforms, and tools for distributed algorithms and systems, addressing correctness, performance, ease of use, and result reproducibility.

* Processes from designing an algorithm to developing a prototype implementation suitable for running on real systems.

* Success stories of experimental evaluation of distributed algorithms, e.g., for classical and blockchain consensus, resulted in new analytical and practical insights.

* Position papers that consider new directions, standpoints, and learned lessons on the design and evaluation of distributed algorithms and systems.

WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS
===============================================================================

Two formats will be considered:

* Research papers

A research paper must describe original research results not previously published or concurrently submitted to journals or other conferences. The submission must not exceed 10 pages excluding references. Appendices are allowed and will be read at the discretion of the reviewers, but the paper must be self-contained without the appendices.

* Position papers

A position paper should aim at fostering discussion and collaboration and may summarize research published elsewhere or outline emerging ideas. The submission must not exceed 5 pages excluding references.

===============================================================================
PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
===============================================================================

Papers are to be submitted electronically through EasyChair:

https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=applied2019

Submissions must be in English, in PDF format, and must be formatted in a single column, use 11-point font, and have 1-inch margins. The first page must contain (1) title, (2) author names and affiliations, (3) contact author’s email, (4) abstract, and (5) indication of whether the paper is on original research or position statements as detailed above.

Submissions not conforming to these rules and papers outside of the scope of the workshop will be rejected without consideration.

The authors are responsible to have at least one of the authors registered to the workshop and presenting their work.

===============================================================================
PUBLICATION
===============================================================================

Final versions of accepted papers will be published in proceedings on arXiv.org.
