Dear Colleagues,

Organoid technology has been established as a state-of-the-art cell culture tool that has emerged to efficiently reveal pathophysiologies and provide therapeutic options for human diseases. They recapitulate the in vivo morphology, heterogeneous cell types, genetic signatures, and functionality of original organs. Cancer organoids can be expanded long-term and genetically modified, which allows for extended applications in cancer research. The development of cancer patient-derived organoids potentially enables cancer modeling, translational medicine, and personalized therapeutics of various diseases.

Generation stage-changed organoids have the potential to reveal the differences in cell selection, specification, and cancer diversity. Heterogeneous aggregation of multiple distinct cell types is required to make functional organoids by developing co-culture systems incorporated with stroma, blood vessels, immune cells, etc. Innovative engineering approaches for organoids and tumor microenvironment production and organization are great tools for modeling cancer development. The establishment of patient-derived tumor organoid biobanks helps us to gain new insights into developing personalized medicine for patients. This Special Issue aims to gather recent advances in human cancer organoid biobanks, novel co-culture systems, and application cases of cancer organoids in pathological and therapeutic research in order to bring about new understanding and potential treatments of cancer.

Areas to be covered in this Special Issue may include, but are not limited to:

Establishment of cancer biobanks.
Development of novel co-culture system.
Use of engineered organoids for cancer modeling.
Application of organoids for mechanistic research of cancer development.
Use of organoids as cancer model systems for personalized therapy.
Use of organoids as high-throughput drug screening for cancer therapy.

We welcome original research, methods, and review articles.

Please contact Sophie Wang ([email protected]) if you have any questions.
