Special Issue on Connected Vehicles and Autonomous Driving (Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing, Hindawi) The automotive industry has been continuously evolving since its inception. This transformation gained new ground in the last decade through signifificant developments in the information and communication technologies (ICT). The use of ICT for novel vehicular applications causes disruptive changes in how automobiles are designed and used. This has brought the automotive technology to the edge of several levels of autonomous driving and related novel use cases. This creates new business opportunities, especially when moving towards full autonomous driving. Indeed, some successful prototypes have already demonstrated hundreds of thousands of autonomously driven miles. Human behavior is implanted in full autonomous driving by making use of big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and other cognitive concepts. The digitization of the road infrastructure and its interaction with connected vehicles and road management entities allows more informed decisions for autonomous driving and transport systems. Obviously, connectivity amongst the roadside sensors, vehicles, and infrastructure plays a key role in realizing the vision of future transportation. This special issue aims to bring together the solutions and enabling technologies that help realize the vision of autonomous driving, provide the community with the current state, highlight the challenges, and study the envisioned ecosystems and integration of heterogeneous technologies. Potential topics include but are not limited to the following: - Use case defifinition for autonomous driving including network requirements - V2X communications including V2V, V2I, V2N, and related infrastructures - 5G radio and architecture for connected and autonomous vehicles - Short-range communication including DSRC and PC5 - High precision channel modelling for V2X communication - L2&L3 protocols for connected vehicles (MAC, routing, mobility management, etc.) - Architecture, protocols, and algorithms for knowledge aggregation and dissemination between connected and autonomous cars - Application of software-defined networking to autonomous driving - Network function virtualization & orchestration in V2X architectures - Intelligent control of network and processing resources in V2X architectures - Dynamic congestion control in V2X communication - Cognition in autonomous driving - Distributed intelligence, machine learning, decision making for autonomous driving - Learning algorithms for autonomous driving - Applications and services with connected vehicles - Smart transport systems using autonomous and connected vehicles - Application of blockchain technology to autonomous and future mobility concepts - Solutions for coexistence of traditional and autonomous vehicles - Security and privacy aspects of autonomous driving solutions - Test fields for autonomous and connected driving in urban, highway, controlled, and open environments - Test environments and evaluation techniques for connected and autonomous cars - Prototypes of connected or autonomous vehicles Authors can submit their manuscripts through the Manuscript Tracking System at https://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/wcmc/cvadd/.
